Tongue & Floor-of-Mouth Retractors

Tongue & Floor-of-Mouth Retractors

Tongue and floor-of-mouth retractors control the tongue and reflect the vestibular fold and floor of the mouth during lower-arch restorative work, extraction, implant access, and soft-tissue procedures. This collection includes the Wieder tongue depressor/retractor, the Middeldorpf floor-of-mouth retractor, and the Vestibulum retractor by Dr. Eirini Kapogianni.

Choosing a Pattern

The Wieder tongue depressor and retractor (small and large) is the standard instrument for controlling the tongue during lower-arch procedures where the tongue would otherwise obstruct access or visibility. The Middeldorpf retractor reflects the floor of the mouth and vestibule for extraction and implant-site access, available in two working widths. The Vestibulum retractor by Dr. Eirini Kapogianni is purpose-built for vestibuloplasty and soft-tissue grafting, holding the vestibular fold clear of the surgical field without impinging on adjacent tissue — see our Periosteal Elevators: Flap Reflection and Tissue Management guide for the companion instruments used alongside it in flap procedures.

For periodontal and hygiene-adjacent procedures involving floor-of-mouth and vestibular access, see our Dental Hygiene & Periodontal Instruments page.

FAQ

When is a Middeldorpf retractor preferred over a standard cheek retractor? When the field of interest is the vestibule or floor of the mouth rather than the cheek — extraction and implant-site preparation in the lower arch commonly call for a Middeldorpf rather than a Cawood-Minnesota or Sternberg pattern.

What procedures use the Vestibulum retractor? Vestibuloplasty, free gingival grafting, and other soft-tissue procedures where the vestibular fold needs to be held clear of the surgical field for an extended period.

Are these instruments autoclavable? Yes — all instruments in this collection are stainless steel, designed for standard autoclave reprocessing.
