The Reprocessing Workflow, Step by Step

  1. Point of use: wipe gross debris immediately; do not allow blood, saliva, cements, or adhesives to dry on jaws or joints. Keep hinged instruments open.
  2. Transport: carry contaminated instruments to the reprocessing area in a closed, puncture-resistant container. Loading directly into a ZEPF washtray at chairside means no further manual handling of sharps.
  3. Manual pre-cleaning: under water (never dry-brush contaminated instruments at splash risk without protection), scrub serrations, box joints, and carbide insert seats with the double-sided instrument brush (85.903.01); clean lumened items such as aspirators internally with the Ø 1.5 mm or Ø 3/5 mm lumen brushes. Remove worn plastic inserts from removal pliers and discard; fresh inserts (33.770.22) are fitted after sterilization.
  4. Ultrasonic / washer-disinfector: process instruments open and separated — the washtray’s silicone supports and hold-down keep joints open and tips out of contact. Use a neutral or mildly alkaline, chloride-free detergent per the IFU; chlorides pit stainless steel and attack carbide braze joints.
  5. Rinse and dry: final-rinse with demineralized water to prevent spotting and mineral deposits in joints; dry thoroughly — residual moisture is the leading cause of friction corrosion in box joints.
  6. Lubricate: place one drop of Paraffinum Perliquidum medical white oil (24.950.10) — physiologically harmless per DAB 10 — or use the Oil-Pen (24.950.12) at every box joint, screw joint, and Mathieu ratchet. Work the joint several times and wipe excess. Never use silicone sprays or non-steam-permeable oils.
  7. Inspect and function-test: under magnification check carbide cutting edges for chips, verify cutters sever a test wire of rated size cleanly, confirm Mathieu ratchets engage and release crisply, check plastic-insert seats, and inspect Onyx-coated retractor surfaces for damage. Route dull or damaged cutters to our factory-certified sharpening & repair service rather than autoclaving a failing edge onward.
  8. Package: sterilize in the washtray inside wrap or pouches with chemical indicators, hinges open, tips protected.
  9. Steam sterilization: autoclave per the IFU — typically fractionated pre-vacuum steam at 134 °C or gravity 121 °C with the corresponding validated hold times. Do not exceed IFU temperatures; do not flash-sterilize instruments with plastic components unless the IFU permits. Monitor every cycle with mechanical, chemical, and periodic biological indicators, and document per your protocol.

Orthodontic-Specific Cautions

  • Carbide inserts: brittle by nature — never cut above rated wire capacity, never pry, and keep chlorides away. Chipped inserts are replaceable through our repair service.
  • Plastic inserts: the tooth-side pads on 33.770.25 and 33.770.21 are consumables — replace with 33.770.22 inserts at the first sign of compression or cuts.
  • Mathieu ratchets: clean in the open position, brush the ratchet teeth, and oil after every cycle; a sticking ratchet is almost always a dry or debris-packed one.
  • Mixed-metal loads: do not process high-carbon steel pliers in contact with corroded or plated items; galvanic contact transfers corrosion.
  • Coated instruments: Onyx (TI) coated retractors tolerate standard steam cycles; avoid abrasive scouring that could scratch the coating.
