History: Who Invented the Tofflemire System?

Benjamin Franklin Tofflemire (1896–1983) was a general dentist trained at the University of California, San Francisco, who practiced in Lafayette, California, and held several dozen patents on dental apparatus over his career. He filed his matrix retainer design in June 1946, and it was granted as U.S. Patent 2,439,703 in April 1948, describing a retainer that let a clinician quickly wrap and hold an individually formed band around a prepared tooth without the fussier matrix systems then in common use. Eight decades later, "Tofflemire" is still the default name for a universal matrix retainer in operatories worldwide.

Clinical Use

The Tofflemire retainer holds a matrix band around a prepared posterior tooth so that Class II composite and amalgam restorations can be placed and contoured against it; wooden or plastic wedges are used alongside the band to improve adaptation and proximal contact. Matrix bands are single-use; the retainers are reusable.
