One Billion Burs

When the brothers Ernst and Otto Busch set up their dental bur factory Busch & Co. in Düsseldorf in 1905, they probably never expected that its productivity would be described with these words just 100 years later.

Their intention was to give a further boost to the still fledgling field of dentistry (there were 500 dentists in the whole of Germany in 1905) by producing better instruments. They and the two following Busch generations succeeded admirably, in this respect, as the company’s entire history after moving to Engelskirchen in 1908 is characterised by its constant adjustments to the latest developments in science and technology.

That aim still drives the company today. Busch supplies dentists and dental laboratories in almost 100 countries with carbide burs, diamond instruments, polishers, ceramic cutters and steel instruments, and keeps adding new products to the range. The know-how gained in dentistry has even carried over into jewelry making, where goldsmiths and stone setters have become loyal Busch customers because of the quality of the tools.

A Family Business Since 1905

More than a century after Ernst and Otto Busch founded it, Busch & Co. is still a family-owned business that, in its own words, plans in generations rather than quarters. The entire production chain, from the raw blank to the finished instrument, remains in-house at the headquarters in Engelskirchen, home to the company since 1908, and runs under a certified quality management system. In 2025 Busch celebrated its 120th anniversary.

Instruments a World-Famous Surgeon Trusted

Professor Ferdinand Sauerbruch had very clear ideas about the characteristics and quality of his surgical instruments. The famous surgeon turned to the instrument maker Zepf in Seitingen, still in its infancy back then, to realise his desired surgical instruments and special prototypes for arm and leg prostheses. Isidor Zepf, who founded the company in 1921, and his daughter Rosa (probably one of the first female surgical instrument makers) were able to manufacture these products according to the wishes and ideas of the Berlin professor. The cooperation, which was really quite unusual at that time, formed the basis for the successful development of Zepf in Seitingen. And it proves what is still a matter of course for Zepf today: to be able to implement innovations in the field of medical instruments at short notice and to develop them into exemplary solutions in cooperation with renowned doctors.

A Family Business in Its Fourth Generation

Over the decades to come, Helmut Zepf senior and Helmut Zepf junior shaped the company into a leading manufacturer of dental instruments in Germany. Today in the fourth generation and headed by Patrick Zepf it is still a family business. Decisions are still based on strict adherence with the basic standards of Zepf’s quality criteria and a profound readiness to innovate. A family needs a home. For Zepf it is clearly Seitingen-Oberflacht, which has been home since 1921.
