American dentistry identifies burs by the traditional US numbering system — ¼ through 10 for rounds, 557 for the crosscut fissure, 330 for the pear — while German manufacturers use figure numbers. Round Burs (Rosehead)
The classic excavating shape. Fractional numbers ¼–¾ are the smallest heads; SX and SXM suffixes are Busch’s low-vibration excavating cuts.
Inverted Cone
Undercuts and flat cavity floors, US 33–41.
Pear
Conservative access and preparation, US 330–333 (L = long).
Straight Fissure (Cylinder)
Plain cut 55–63, crosscut 555–563; L = long, 1155+ = round-end (R) versions.
Tapered Fissure (Cone)
Plain cut 168–172, crosscut 698–704; 1700s = round-end versions.
Finishing Burs
Multi-blade carbide and steel finishers: 7000s round, 7100s bud, 7300s pear, 7400s egg (football), 7600s round-end taper, and 242 for the flame. The 8000s are the fine (20-blade class) versions and the 9000s the ultra-fine 30-blade versions of the same shapes.
Other Shapes
End-cutting, surgical, and specialty numbers. US 958 is the end-cutting cylinder — Busch figure 207 — a mapping confirmed across manufacturers: Komet codes the same pattern H207, Meisinger HM207, and Brasseler USA sells theirs as the “958 FG” outright. Surgical bone cutters (Busch 162A, 164LA and kin) sit outside the US numbering system entirely; to cross-shop those, use the Dental Bur Comparison Chart, where the 164LA long-neck bone cutter is paired with its Komet H254LE counterpart.
