How to Read a Periodontal Probe
Insert the probe parallel to the long axis of the tooth with light pressure (approximately 10–25 g) until resistance is met at the base of the sulcus or pocket. Read the measurement at the gingival margin, rounding up to the nearest marking. Record six sites per tooth: mesio-buccal, buccal, disto-buccal, and the corresponding lingual sites. Pocket depths of 1–3 mm are generally healthy; 4 mm and beyond warrants closer periodontal evaluation.
