Understanding Handle Types

History: Who Invented the Interchangeable Scalpel Blade and Handle?

The reusable-handle, disposable-blade system behind every product in this collection dates to 1910, when Chicago surgeon Dr. John B. Murphy perfected a handle designed to take a separate, replaceable cutting edge. In 1914, Morgan Parker worked out a reliable way to lock a thin steel blade onto that handle — reportedly inspired by King Gillette's disposable razor blade, patented a few years earlier. The Bard-Parker Company patented the complete interchangeable system in 1915, and it remains essentially unchanged in principle over a century later: reusable handles are still called "B.P. handles" after the company, and Helmut Zepf's handles and blades follow that same interchangeable standard.
