History: Who Invented the Castroviejo Suture Removal Scissors?

These fine spring-handled scissors descend from the microsurgical instrument line Ramón Castroviejo (1904–1987) developed for corneal transplant surgery in the 1930s and 1940s — precision tools built for work no ring-handled scissors could manage. Removing a 6-0 or 7-0 suture close to the tissue calls for the same control keratoplasty demanded: a tip fine enough to slip under the knot without catching the papilla, and a spring action light enough not to tug the wound as the thread is cut. That is why the Castroviejo pattern, rather than a standard suture scissors, became the instrument periodontists and implantologists reach for whenever a suture has to come out cleanly.
