Dental Bur Color Coding & ISO 6360 Guide
Every rotary instrument tells you what it is — if you can read the code. The colored ring on the shank identifies the grit or cut, and the ISO 6360 number printed on the packaging describes the entire instrument: material, shank, shape, grit, and size. This guide decodes both systems as used on German-made Busch & Co. instruments.

Diamond grit ring colors
Diamond instruments carry a colored band on the shank indicating grit size, from black (coarsest) to yellow (finest — Busch's finest standard band). The middle ISO grit code (4th group of the ISO number) encodes the same information:

Which bur color to use at each step
Most preparations move from coarse to fine grit. Reading the ring color lets you pick the right grit at each stage, which keeps the sequence consistent and leaves a smoother, better-sealing margin:
- Gross reduction & crown removal — reach for a black (super coarse) or green (coarse) diamond to remove bulk structure quickly. Shop coarse diamonds →
- Main preparation — switch to a medium (blue / unbanded) diamond, the workhorse grit for shaping the prep and establishing margins. Shop medium diamonds →
- Margin refinement — move to a red (fine) diamond to smooth the margin and remove scratches left by coarser grits. Shop fine diamonds →
- Finishing & pre-polish — refine composite, enamel and the prep surface with a yellow (extra fine) diamond. Shop extra-fine diamonds →
- Final polish — bring the surface to a high luster with polishers and pastes rather than a cutting diamond.
Stepping down the grit ladder in order — rather than jumping from coarse straight to polish — minimizes marginal microfractures and produces a cleaner, better-fitting restoration.
Carbide ring colors
Carbide burs are classified by toothing rather than grit — crosscut, fine crosscut, and Busch's own SX, SXM, XA, and XTi cuts — but finishing carbides and lab cutters also use ring colors:

How to read an ISO 6360 bur number in 60 seconds
806 314 110 524 012, one group at a time: material, shank, shape, grit and size — and why the same number means the same instrument from any brand.
Take a Busch 836 cylinder diamond, FG shank, size 012. Its ISO number is 806 314 110 524 012, and each group means:

Length variants add letters to the Busch designation: L (long), and on FG shanks XL / extra-long versions for improved reach. The shank determines compatibility — an FG bur will not seat in a latch-type contra-angle.
Head size: the last three digits
The final ISO group is the largest head diameter in tenths of a millimetre: 010 = 1.0 mm, 014 = 1.4 mm, 023 = 2.3 mm. This is also the number after the figure in every Busch designation — in 'Busch No. 836 012', the 012 is the size. What does a bur with no colored ring mean? On a diamond instrument, no ring means medium (standard) grit. It is the workhorse grit for general preparation.

Coarser grits (black, green) remove tooth structure faster, while finer grits (red, yellow) leave a smoother finish. On carbide and lab cutters the ring identifies the cut instead.

What color is a medium-grit diamond bur? Medium (standard) grit is the unbanded default — Busch and many other makers leave the band off, though it is sometimes shown as blue. Its ISO grit code is 52x.
