Orthodontic pliers are defined by beak geometry and by the wire they are rated to cut, and using a plier beyond its rating is the fastest way to chip a carbide insert. Bird beak, Tweed and Aderer pliers form loops and bends in round and rectangular archwire; hammerhead and lingual bow pliers handle specific adjustments. Distal end cutters hold the severed segment rather than letting it drop into the patient's mouth, and the tungsten carbide insert versions retain a cutting edge far longer than solid stainless under repeated use on stainless steel and nickel-titanium. The aligner pliers — horizontal, vertical and general — create the attachment and pressure points that clear aligner therapy depends on.
