The Reprocessing Workflow, Step by Step
1. Handle promptly after use. The single most common reprocessing mistake is letting debris dry onto the instrument. Dried blood, dentin, and composite are dramatically harder to remove and can shield microorganisms from disinfection. Place used burs into a holding solution or begin cleaning as soon as practical after the procedure.

2. Clean before you disinfect. Sterilization only works on clean instruments. Ultrasonic cleaning in a suitable instrument-cleaning solution is the standard for rotary instruments — it reaches the flutes, cross-cuts, and grit interstices that brushing misses. A thermal washer-disinfector is an excellent alternative where available. If manual brushing is used at all, use a dedicated brush and appropriate protective equipment, and never handle contaminated burs with bare fingers.
3. Mind the chemistry. This is where rotary instruments differ from general hand instruments. Tungsten carbide is vulnerable to attack from strongly alkaline solutions and from hydrogen-peroxide-based cleaners, and chloride-containing solutions promote corrosion on steel shanks. Use cleaning and disinfecting agents explicitly labeled as suitable for rotary instruments and carbide, follow the stated concentration exactly, and never exceed the stated immersion time — "soaking overnight" is how good burs die.
4. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Rinse with demineralized water to remove chemical residues, then dry completely. Residual moisture entering the sterilizer is a primary cause of corrosion and staining on instrument shanks.
5. Inspect before packaging. Check each instrument under good light, ideally with magnification. Discard carbides with chipped or rounded blades and diamonds with bald or clogged working areas — a worn bur forces higher pressure and generates more heat at the next preparation. Fine debris clinging to abrasive instruments can often be renewed with a dressing stone before the instrument goes back into rotation.
6. Sterilize by steam. Steam autoclaving is the validated standard for reusable carbide and diamond rotary instruments. Run the cycle specified in the manufacturer's instructions and let instruments dry fully inside the sterilizer before removal. Chemical "cold sterilization" soaks are not a substitute for heat sterilization of instruments used intraorally.
7. Store protected and organized. Sterile instruments should stay sterile — and stay findable. Material-Specific Notes
Carbide instruments. The blades of every instrument in our Dental Carbide Bur collection are precision-ground tungsten carbide — extremely hard, but brittle at the cutting edge. Avoid tumbling burs loose together in trays or ultrasonic baskets, where edge-to-edge contact chips blades; a block or segmented insert prevents this. Watch immersion chemistry and times closely, as described above.
Diamond instruments. For the instruments in our Dental Diamond Bur collection, the main enemies are clogging and grit loss. Ultrasonic cleaning is particularly important for diamonds because debris packs into the spaces between grit particles, where it both harbors contamination and blunts cutting efficiency. Handle diamonds individually rather than in loose contact with other metal instruments.
Know which of your instruments are single-use. Some rotary instruments and polishers are designated single-patient-use by the manufacturer and must not be reprocessed regardless of apparent condition. Check the labeling for each product; when in doubt, consult the instruction library or ask us.

Rotary instruments rarely travel through sterilization alone. How many sterilization cycles will a bur survive? There is no fixed number — service life is determined by the materials cut, operating technique, and reprocessing chemistry far more than by the autoclave itself. A carbide used correctly on dentin and reprocessed with suitable chemistry outlasts one soaked in the wrong disinfectant after a single appointment. When should a bur be retired? When inspection shows chipped or rounded carbide blades, bald or glazed diamond surfaces, visible corrosion, or any shank damage — bent or scored shanks are a safety issue at operating speed, not just a performance one. Can I sterilize burs in their plastic retail packaging? No — transfer instruments to a sterilizable carrier such as a STERI-SAFE bur block or an appropriate cassette. Retail packaging is not designed for autoclave conditions.
