Carbide Burs: The Ring Tells You the Blade Count

On carbide instruments, there is no grit — carbides cut with machined blades, not abrasive particles — so the ring colors carry a different meaning: the type and fineness of the toothing.

  • Green ring — power cut. Busch's "schnittfreudige Verzahnung" (aggressive, cut-happy toothing) for maximum material removal. You'll find the green ring on the 1SX and slender-neck 1SXM excavating burs as well as the 141-series surgical bone cutters.
  • Standard and cross-cut carbides — no ring. The everyday preparation carbides (the 1-series rounds, 7-series pears, 21/31/33-series fissure burs) carry medium toothing and no colored ring.

COOL DIAMANT is gold — in every grit. Busch's COOL DIAMANT line features asymmetrically intersecting diamond-coated cooling grooves that carry extra coolant and interrupt the grinding contact up to seven times per rotation for a measurably cooler cut. Per the catalog, the original COOL DIAMANT instruments are finished in gold across all three available grits precisely so they can be identified instantly on a crowded tray. The grit is instead coded in the suffix: G = coarse (CD72G), no suffix = medium (CD72), F = fine (CD72F).

ZIRAMANT carries a Z. The ZIRAMANT instruments use a special diamond coating engineered for zirconia and full-ceramic work — trepanation and removal of zirconia restorations, abutment correction, and fine adjustment at incorporation. The Z suffix (6880Z, 862Z, 8838LZ) flags the special coating; the familiar 6/8 prefixes still indicate coarse and fine.
