Spade Elevator for Atraumatic Extraction

Spade Elevator for Atraumatic Extraction

A spade elevator is a thin, spade-shaped root elevator worked down the periodontal ligament space to loosen desmodontal fibers and luxate a tooth or root tip with minimal bone removal. This collection holds the Helmut Zepf X-Tool spade elevator family made in Germany: the X-Desmo-Tool straight 4.0 mm (No. 17.007.05), the X-Tool syndesmotomes curved for mesial, distal, left and right access (No. 17.008.05, .06, .08, .09), the X-Tool apical desmotome 3.0 mm (No. 17.008.10), the complete X-Tool spade elevator set (No. 17.007.75), each also in an Onyx-coated TI version, plus the Bernard spade elevator straight (No. 17.426.01AS) and the H-Tool #5 root tip elevator (No. 17.009.05). They are used for atraumatic extraction and root tip removal ahead of immediate implant placement.

All X-Tool instruments are made of German surgical stainless steel — fully autoclavable and built for long-term sharpness and strength — and carry a colored metallic ID ball on the handle so the set can be read at a glance.

Clinical Use

The X-Tool sequence follows the extraction: the straight X-Desmo-Tool opens the ligament space and loosens the desmodontal fibers, the curved syndesmotomes work mesially, distally, and on the lingual/buccal sides to luxate the tooth without levering on the buccal plate, and the apical desmotome and H-Tool reach a fractured root tip deep in the socket — the atraumatic approach that keeps the socket walls intact for socket preservation and immediate implant placement. The Bernard spade elevator is the classic straight spade for the same luxation work.

Care and Reconditioning

Spade elevators are cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized between patients and inspected for a straight, undamaged working end; a thin blade that has bent or dulled should be reconditioned before reuse, and the Onyx coating is cleaned without abrasive pastes. Our Dental Hand Instrument Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide covers the general workflow for Helmut Zepf instruments.
