History: Who Invented the Tower Point Scissors?

"Tower Point" describes the blade rather than a person: the two blades taper steeply to a slim, spire-like point — a tower — that gives reach into confined spaces. The profile originated in the Solingen cutlery tradition as a nail and cuticle pattern, where a slim point that could reach under a fold without cutting it was the whole object, and instrument makers carried the geometry over to fine suture and gum scissors. There is no eponymous surgeon; the name is simply an honest description of the tip.

FAQ

When would I choose Tower Point over Iris scissors? When the space is the problem. An Iris has fine points too, but the Tower Point's steep taper reaches further into tunnels and embrasures before the blade widens. For open, visible cuts the Iris is the better everyday tool.

Are the tips fragile? They are fine and should be treated as such — trim tissue, never lever or cut wire, and store them tip-protected in a cassette.

Can they be resharpened? Yes. Standard, Supercut and Onyx blades can be professionally reground; tungsten carbide edges are re-honed. Use our scissors sharpening service (serrated and micro-surgical versions available) rather than a chairside stone, which will ruin a micro-serration.

How should these scissors be reprocessed? Clean, ultrasonically process and autoclave them exactly as the packaging symbols and Helmut Zepf's validated instructions describe; keep the joint lightly lubricated and never autoclave scissors closed.
