History: Who Invented the Hold-N-Cut Micro Needle Holder Scissors?

The Hold-N-Cut is a modern instrument with a named designer. Dr. Dietmar Weng — Privatdozent, specialist in implantology and prosthodontics, and Vice-President of the German Society of Dentistry and Oral Medicine (DGZMK) from 2013 to 2023 — was senior physician at the University of Würzburg from 1998 to 2004, which is why Helmut Zepf catalogues the instrument as the micro needle holder "model Würzburg, Hold-and-Cut, combined with scissors." It grew out of the microsurgical suturing techniques he taught there and later in his Starnberg practice: a needle holder that cuts, so the surgeon's hands never leave the field.

Is the Hold-N-Cut a needle holder or a scissors? Both. The jaws hold the needle for suturing; a scissors blade set behind the jaws cuts the suture once the knot is tied. Use it for micro suture only — it is not a utility cutter.

What suture sizes does it handle? It is designed for microsurgical suture, typically 5-0 to 7-0. For heavier suture use a conventional needle holder and a Spencer or Surgical Scissors.

Can they be resharpened? The scissors blade can be serviced through our micro-surgical sharpening service; the TC jaws are re-faced as part of the same service.
