History: Who Invented the Surgical Scissors?
The straight operating scissors is the oldest instrument on this page: its pattern is recognisable in Hieronymus Brunschwig's 1497 surgical text, and the blunt/sharp and sharp/sharp tip conventions had settled by the nineteenth century. The heavier "Mayo" version was developed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for and by the brothers William J. Mayo (1861–1939) and Charles H. Mayo (1865–1939) in the early 1900s, and it is the Mayo that most clinicians picture when they say "utility scissors." Helmut Zepf's #2 and #3 are the dental-length descendants of that lineage — the same role, scaled to the mouth.
