How to read an ISO bur number

1 · Material (first 3 digits)

What the working part is made of. 806 is a diamond bur, 500 is tungsten carbide, 310 is steel, 807 is sintered diamond.

2 · Shank (digits 4–6)

Which handpiece it fits. 314 is friction grip (FG), 204 is latch-type contra-angle (RA), 104 is straight handpiece (HP). 315 and 316 are long and extra-long FG.

3 · Shape (digits 7–9)

The head form. 001 is round, 010 inverted cone, 107 cylinder, 198 taper, 249 flame, 277 football, 288 torpedo, among hundreds of shapes.

4 · Grit or cut (digits 10–12)

For diamonds: 504 extra fine (yellow ring), 514 fine (red), 524 medium (no ring), 534 coarse (green), 544 super coarse (black). For carbide it describes the blade cut.

5 · Head size (last 3 digits)

The largest head diameter in tenths of a millimetre. 014 is 1.4 mm, 018 is 1.8 mm.

Same code, same bur. If two burs share all five groups they share material, shank, shape, grit and size. When only the grit or the shank differs, the decoder shows the nearest Busch options with the differing group highlighted. Every dental bur box carries a 15-digit ISO 6360 number. It describes the instrument rather than the company that made it, so the same code from any maker means the same material, shank, shape, grit and head size. Enter it above and the decoder explains each group and lists the Busch bur with that code.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ISO bur number? It is the 15-digit code defined by the ISO 6360 standard for rotary dental instruments. It is printed on the label of most bur packs, usually in five groups of three digits.

What does each part of the code mean? The first three digits give the material, the next three the shank type, then the head shape, the grit or blade cut, and finally the head diameter in tenths of a millimetre.

What does 314 mean on a bur? 314 in the second group means a friction grip (FG) shank for high-speed handpieces. 204 is a latch-type contra-angle (RA) shank and 104 is a straight handpiece (HP) shank.

How do I read the grit on a diamond bur code? In the fourth group, 504 is extra fine (yellow ring), 514 fine (red ring), 524 medium, 534 coarse (green ring) and 544 super coarse (black ring).

What if the decoder finds no Busch match? It shows the nearest Busch options, such as the same bur in another grit or shank. If none fits, contact us or call (917) 480-2682 ext 101 and we will check the full Busch catalog.
