History: Who Invented the Strabismus Scissors?

Strabismus scissors are named for the operation, not a surgeon. Strabismus (squint) surgery began with Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach's tenotomy of an extraocular muscle in Berlin in 1839, and by the second half of the nineteenth century ophthalmologists had settled on a small, curved, blunt-tipped tenotomy scissors that could divide a muscle tendon without injuring the sclera beneath it. The pattern passed into general fine surgery under the name of the procedure that created it, and dental surgeons use it today for the same reason the eye surgeons did: it cuts precisely while protecting what lies underneath.
