La Grange Scissors

La Grange Scissors

La Grange scissors are compound-curved perio scissors: the double (S) curve of the blades keeps your hand out of the line of sight while the tips work interproximally, around the tuberosity and in posterior sites where a single curve cannot reach. At 11.5 cm they are fine enough for gingivectomy refinement and papilla work. Helmut Zepf makes them serrated, Supercut and Onyx-coated.

Premium La Grange Scissors Collection

Our range covers the configurations clinicians ask for most:

  • La Grange compound curved, serrated — The standard pattern (46.057.11)
  • La Grange Supercut — Micro-serrated edge for a cleaner shear with less pressure (46.057.11SC)
  • La Grange Onyx — Supercut blades with the black, glare-free Onyx coating (46.057.11TISC)

All instruments are forged from premium German surgical stainless steel — fully autoclavable, corrosion-resistant, and engineered to hold their edge through hundreds of sterilization cycles.

Why Choose Zepf La Grange Scissors?

  • The double curve — Reaches where straight and single-curved scissors leave your hand in the way
  • 11.5 cm, fine tips — Gingivectomy precision, not utility bulk
  • Serrated or Supercut — Holds thin gingiva so the cut lands where you aimed
  • Posterior access — Second and third molar, tuberosity and interproximal sites

Clinical Applications

  • Gingivectomy and interproximal tissue trimming
  • Tuberosity reduction
  • Flap refinement in posterior quadrants
  • Implant uncovering in the posterior maxilla
  • Papilla and margin work where visibility is limited

History: Who Invented the La Grange Scissors?

The pattern is conventionally attributed to Pierre-Félix Lagrange (1857–1928), professor of ophthalmology at the University of Bordeaux, whose sclerecto-iridectomy of 1906 was a landmark glaucoma operation. Cutting sclera at the limbus while keeping the hand clear of the visual axis called for a small scissors with a double curve — and that S-curve is the whole point of the La Grange. Periodontists adopted it for the identical reason: it lets the tips work interproximally while the rings stay out of the line of sight. The scissors attribution rests on catalogue convention rather than a dated description, so we state it as such.

FAQ

La Grange vs Goldman Fox compound curved? Close cousins. The La Grange is shorter (11.5 cm) with a more pronounced double curve for the tightest posterior access; the Goldman Fox 46.207 is 13 cm and a little more general-purpose. Posterior specialists tend to keep the La Grange.

Can I use La Grange scissors for suture? Occasionally, but they are a fine trimmer — routine suture cutting belongs to a Surgical Scissors or Spencer.

Which edge should I choose — Standard, Supercut, TC or Onyx? This La Grange pattern is available in standard serrated, Supercut and Onyx-coated Supercut versions. Standard is the everyday choice; Supercut adds a micro-serrated edge for a cleaner shear with less pressure; tungsten carbide holds an edge far longer between sharpenings; Onyx is a Supercut blade with a black coating that eliminates glare under loupes and lights. The style comparison chart in our Scissor Selection Guide sets them side by side.

Can they be resharpened? Yes. Standard, Supercut and Onyx blades can be professionally reground; tungsten carbide edges are re-honed. Use our scissors sharpening service (serrated and micro-surgical versions available) rather than a chairside stone, which will ruin a micro-serration.

Where are these scissors made? Every scissors in this collection is forged and finished by Helmut Zepf Medizintechnik in Seitingen-Oberflacht, Germany — precision dental and surgical instruments since 1921 — and ships fast from our US warehouse.
