Straight osteotomes are bone-condensing instruments with a straight shaft and a convex or concave working tip, tapped into the implant site in graduated diameters to compress and expand bone for crestal sinus floor elevation, ridge expansion and implant site preparation in anterior and straightforward anatomy. This collection holds the Helmut Zepf straight osteotomes made in Germany: the complete straight osteotome set with ZEPFcare wash basket (No. 47.940.00), the individual convex (No. 47.944.20–.43) and concave (No. 47.942.20–.43) straight osteotomes in Ø 2.0 to Ø 3.9/4.3 mm with color marks for implant diameters Ø 3.3 to Ø 6.0, the Ø 6.0 straight widener (No. 47.940.60), and the OST SET I bone condensing set by Dr. Hohl and Dr. Hildebrand (No. 47.949.90).
All straight osteotomes are German surgical stainless steel — fully autoclavable and corrosion-resistant — with color marks on the shaft that identify the implant diameter each size prepares, so the sequence can be read at a glance in the tray.
Which Straight Osteotome Do You Need?
Concave tips are in the first column, convex tips in the second; each row is one step in the graduated sequence. Every product in the collection is linked once.

Clinical Use
In a crestal (internal) sinus floor elevation the osteotomes are tapped in sequence from Ø 2.0 mm upward until the implant diameter is reached, condensing rather than removing bone; the concave tip carries a plug of bone and graft ahead of it to lift the membrane, while the convex tip compresses the socket walls for ridge expansion and primary stability in soft bone. The straight shaft suits anterior and premolar sites with direct access; angulated osteotomes are the choice where the posterior anatomy blocks a straight line.
Care and Reconditioning
Osteotomes are cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized between patients in the wash basket, and the working tips are inspected for burrs or deformation after each case; the color marks are durable but should not be scrubbed with abrasive pastes. Our Dental Hand Instrument Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide covers the general workflow for Helmut Zepf instruments.
