History: Who Invented the Kelly Scissors?
The Kelly pattern is attributed to Howard Atwood Kelly (1858–1943), the gynecologist who was one of the four founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital and a prolific designer of instruments during his Hopkins years, roughly the 1890s to the 1910s. His clamp is the instrument most surgeons know by name; the scissors carrying his name share the same character — a medium-weight operating pattern with enough length to work at depth. The attribution of the scissors to Kelly is by long convention in manufacturers' catalogues rather than a dated publication, so we state it as such.

Kelly vs Dean scissors — which do I need? Both are long utility scissors. The Kelly is curved on flat with a conventional shank; the Dean is angled with serrated blades designed to grip during tonsil and oral surgery. Choose the Kelly for a curved cutting line and general reach; choose the Dean when you need the angle to clear the anterior teeth.
Is 16 cm too long for general use? For anterior work a 13 cm Surgical Scissors #2/#3 is handier. The Kelly earns its length in posterior and deep sites — most surgical trays carry both.
Which edge should I choose — Standard, Supercut, TC or Onyx? This Kelly pattern is available in standard serrated, Supercut, tungsten carbide (TC) and Onyx-coated Supercut versions.
