Columbia curettes are universal curettes: a blade with two cutting edges set at 90 degrees to the shank, so both sides of a tooth are worked without changing instrument. Clinical Use of the Columbia 4R/4L Universal Curette

• Posterior teeth, with a longer and more robust shank: both cutting edges are used, so the mesial and distal surfaces of each tooth are covered with the same instrument.
• Subgingival scaling and root planing: keep the face of the blade at 90 degrees to the shank, adapt the lower cutting edge to the root, and use short overlapping strokes.
• Deep and narrow sites: choose the M5 version when pockets exceed 5 mm; the very-fine-tip inserts suit tight interproximal spaces.

Versions, Coatings and Handles

Titanium working ends are for use around implants, where steel would mark the implant surface. The ZEPF-bIONIK handle is Zepf’s ergonomic, colour-coded handle with a textured grip that reduces hand fatigue. Interchangeable inserts fit the M4 × 0.5 mm and M2.5 Zepf handle systems (ZEPF-bIONIK QUICKFIX, Z-SHAPE Relax, ZEPF-Line) and change with the Zepf safety key.

Sharpening, Retipping and Inserts

An instrument earns its keep only while it is sharp.
