- Caries and margin detection: a light, exploratory stroke with the tip; catch or resistance indicates a defect or calculus.
- Calculus detection: subgingival calculus is felt as a roughness or ledge on an otherwise smooth root surface.
- Tip care: a bent or blunted tip loses tactility; replace the insert or the instrument rather than straightening it.
