Onyx Dental Scissors

Onyx scissors are Helmut Zepf's Supercut scissors finished with a black Onyx coating. The micro-serrated cutting edge is identical to the Supercut; what changes is the surface — a hard, dark coating that kills the glare of loupes, headlights and microscope illumination, and shrugs off the discoloration that bright steel picks up over hundreds of cycles. Every Onyx model carries the TISC suffix, and the pattern range covers the fine trimmers and dissectors where you work under magnification.

History: Where the Onyx Edge Came From

Black and dark coatings on surgical instruments came out of laser and microscope surgery in the late twentieth century, where a reflective blade under intense illumination could blind the surgeon to the very tip they were guiding — and, in laser work, reflect the beam. Instrument makers answered with hard, non-reflective surface treatments, and Helmut Zepf's Onyx line brings that idea to dental scissors: a Supercut blade, a black coating, and a tip you can see under any light.

FAQ

Is Onyx a different edge from Supercut? No — Onyx is the Supercut edge with a black coating. If you want the Supercut shear without the coating, buy the SC model; if you work under loupes or a scope, the Onyx earns its premium.

Does the coating wear off when sharpened? Sharpening removes the coating along the cutting edge only; the rest of the blade stays black. Use our serrated scissors sharpening service — never a chairside stone, which destroys the micro-serration.
