History: Who Invented the Locklin Scissors?

Locklin is one of the eponyms that instrument catalogues preserve better than the medical literature does. The offset, one-blade-serrated gum scissors carrying the name appears in twentieth-century American dental catalogues and is presumed to honour an American dental surgeon, but no biography or dated publication has survived in the sources we can verify, so we do not invent one. What the pattern itself records is clear enough: a clinician who spent a lot of time trimming tissue at the back of the mouth and wanted his hand out of his own view.

Locklin vs Dean scissors? Both reach the posterior. The Dean is angled on flat with both blades serrated — a heavier utility cutter; the Locklin is offset sideways with one serrated blade — a lighter gum trimmer. Choose the Dean for suture and bulk, the Locklin for controlled gingival trimming.

Why only one serrated blade? One toothed blade is enough to stop tissue sliding, while the smooth blade keeps the cut clean. It is the same principle as the Supercut, which refines the idea with a micro-serration.

Which edge should I choose — Standard, Supercut, TC or Onyx? This Locklin pattern is available in standard serrated and Supercut versions. Standard is the everyday choice; Supercut adds a micro-serrated edge for a cleaner shear with less pressure; tungsten carbide holds an edge far longer between sharpenings; Onyx is a Supercut blade with a black coating that eliminates glare under loupes and lights. Can they be resharpened? Yes. Standard, Supercut and Onyx blades can be professionally reground; tungsten carbide edges are re-honed. Use our scissors sharpening service (serrated and micro-surgical versions available) rather than a chairside stone, which will ruin a micro-serration.
