US No. 39 Bur – Busch Inverted Cone Carbide & Steel, Made in Germany

The US No. 39 is the American number for an inverted cone bur with a 1.8 mm head (ISO size 018): a head that widens toward the tip, so it cuts undercuts and flat floors that a round or cylinder bur cannot. Busch & Co. manufactures it in Germany as Busch No. 2 018. Every US No. 39 on this page is a genuine Busch instrument and ships from our US warehouse.

Speed and Technique

Because the widest cutting edge is at the tip, work with the side of the head in short strokes rather than plunging; run both HP versions at laboratory speed in the straight handpiece. Maximum recommended speeds for every Busch shape are in our Dental Bur Speed Chart, and reprocessing steps in the Bur Sterilization Guide.

Made in Germany by Busch & Co.

Busch & Co. has manufactured rotary instruments in Engelskirchen, Germany since 1905. Every instrument on this page is a genuine Busch product, precision-ground on a concentric shank under ISO 13485-certified quality management and covered by our Busch warranty.

Clinical Use

  • Retention and relief: cutting undercuts, retention channels and relief in acrylic and plaster, where the head widening toward the tip forms the lock.
  • Flat floors: squaring and flattening the floor of a cut in acrylic or plaster.

At 1.8 mm the No. 39 is a large head for prosthetic and laboratory reduction.

Care and Reconditioning

Busch carbide and steel burs are reusable: clean, disinfect and sterilize them between patients following the manufacturer instructions and replace them once they dull. Our Dental Bur Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide gives the steps for Busch rotary instruments.
