Independent Research: Test Winner at Innsbruck
In an independent laboratory study at the Medical University of Innsbruck, Busch’s COOL DIAMANT design achieved the highest cutting performance in both test series — outperforming same-shape, same-grit diamonds from up to ten competing manufacturers. Under standardized conditions (200,000 rpm turbine, constant 152 g load, 10–40 minutes of continuous cutting on 99.5% Al₂O₃ ceramic), the COOL DIAMANT instrument removed significantly more material than burs from Diatech, Edenta, Horico and Komet (p < 0.05), and in the second series the standard Busch diamond placed second only to its cooling-groove sibling. The authors concluded that instruments with cooling grooves deliver higher grinding performance and need replacing less often.

The football (egg) head is used for occlusal reduction on posterior teeth and for lingual reduction of anterior teeth, and its COOL DIAMANT cooling grooves reduce heat build-up in use. Being coarse, it is a bulk-reduction instrument rather than a finishing one. The 2.3 mm head is a larger size, best for posterior bulk reduction where there is room to work.
