Cheek & Lip Retractors

Cheek & Lip Retractors

Cheek and lip retractors are the everyday workhorses of chairside dentistry — used for routine restorative access, hygiene visits, and intraoral photography where a simple, atraumatic soft-tissue retractor is all that's needed. This collection gathers the Cawood-Minnesota, Sternberg, ZEPF Universal, Whale Fin, and Dr. Kim patterns, most available with the interchangeable ZEPF-bIONIK handle system and several offered with onyx coating for added tip visibility and glare reduction.

Choosing a Pattern

The Cawood-Minnesota and Sternberg patterns are the classic four-handed-dentistry standards for single or double-cheek retraction. The ZEPF Universal Lip & Cheek Retractor by Dr. Stanislaw Matyszcyk works both upper and lower jaw in one instrument, while the angled Dr. Kim patterns and the Whale Fin retractor add serrated, angled tips suited to photography and adhesive/bonding procedures where a clean, dry field is critical. The TOUCHGRIP single-ended Hilger retractor and its matching insert round out the range for operators who prefer a lighter, single-point retraction style.

Several patterns in this collection use the ZEPF-bIONIK interchangeable handle system, and select patterns are available with onyx coating for extended edge life and reduced glare under operatory lighting. Many of these designs originate with named clinician collaborators — see our Dental KOL Innovators page for the specialists behind these patterns.

FAQ

What's the difference between the Cawood-Minnesota and Sternberg retractors? Both are general-purpose cheek/lip retractors; Sternberg is sized specifically for lip retraction while Cawood-Minnesota patterns come in wider cheek-retraction widths, including a modified version for extended procedures.

Can I replace just the working tip on a bIONIK-handle retractor? Yes — bIONIK-compatible patterns in this collection use interchangeable tips on a shared ergonomic handle, so you can standardize on one handle and stock replacement tips by pattern.

Are onyx-coated retractors worth the upgrade over standard stainless steel? Onyx coating adds a harder, lower-glare surface that resists staining and improves visibility under operatory lighting; the underlying geometry and function are identical to the uncoated version.
