Scalpel Handles and Blades Overview Video
Which Dental Scalpel Handle and Blade Do You Need?
For most incisions in oral surgery and periodontics a #3-type handle fitted with a #15 or #15C blade is the everyday choice, with #11 and #12 used for stab incisions and sulcular or interproximal cuts. The first two tables list the standard, 3D and parallel handles together with the blade sizes each is specified to take.
Every active product in the collection is linked once below, grouped by handle type, blades and accessories.

Understanding Handle Types
All Zepf handles take the standard interchangeable blade fitting, so the choice is about how the handle sits in the hand and how the blade comes off. The 3D handles are angled to keep the hand clear of the line of sight in the posterior; the parallel handles hold the blade in line with the shaft for straight incisions; and the Drop-Control handles add a patented one-hand ejection: press the slider and the used blade lifts, advances and drops into the sharps container without being touched.
History: Who Invented the Interchangeable Scalpel Blade and Handle?
The reusable-handle, disposable-blade system behind every product in this collection dates to 1910, when Chicago surgeon Dr. John B. Murphy perfected a handle designed to take a separate, replaceable cutting edge. In 1914, Morgan Parker worked out a reliable way to lock a thin steel blade onto that handle — reportedly inspired by King Gillette's disposable razor blade, patented a few years earlier. The Bard-Parker Company patented the complete interchangeable system in 1915, and it remains essentially unchanged in principle over a century later: reusable handles are still called "B.P. handles" after the company, and Helmut Zepf's handles and blades follow that same interchangeable standard.
Clinical Use
Dental scalpels make the primary incisions in oral surgery, periodontics and implant procedures: a #15 or #15C blade on a #3-type handle for most incisions, #11 and #12 for stab incisions and sulcular or interproximal cuts, and the micro surgical blades #63, 64, 67 and 69 for fine incisions. The 3D and angled handles position the blade where a straight handle cannot reach, and the parallel handles cut two incisions at a fixed interval.
Care and Reconditioning
Scalpel handles are reusable: clean, disinfect and sterilize them between patients following the manufacturer instructions and the symbols on each package, while blades are single-use and go straight into the sharps container — the Drop-Control handles and the KLINGEX and safety blade removers take the blade off without touching it. Our Surgical Instrument Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide covers the general workflow.
