History: Who Invented the Joseph Scissors?

Jacques Joseph (1865–1934), the Berlin surgeon regarded as the father of modern rhinoplasty and aesthetic facial surgery, reported his first intranasal hump reduction in 1904 and over the following decades built a complete instrument set — saws, elevators, knives and these fine curved scissors — for dissecting nasal skin and soft tissue, codified in his atlas Nasenplastik und sonstige Gesichtsplastik (1928–31). The scissors were designed for work where the outcome is judged cosmetically, which is precisely why periodontal plastic surgeons reached for the same pattern.

FAQ

Joseph vs Metzenbaum — which is the dissector? Both dissect. The Metzenbaum is longer with blunt/blunt tips for spreading full-thickness planes; the Joseph is finer and curved, for delicate partial-thickness and aesthetic work where you also need to trim cleanly.

Why is the Supercut version popular for grafting? The micro-serrated edge shears connective tissue cleanly with almost no crushing, so graft edges heal with less scarring. It is the version most periodontists choose for the aesthetic zone.

Which edge should I choose — Standard, Supercut, TC or Onyx? This Joseph pattern is available in standard serrated, Supercut and Onyx-coated Supercut versions. Standard is the everyday choice; Supercut adds a micro-serrated edge for a cleaner shear with less pressure; tungsten carbide holds an edge far longer between sharpenings; Onyx is a Supercut blade with a black coating that eliminates glare under loupes and lights.
