Modified Vienna Bone Chisel
The Modified Vienna bone chisel (Helmut Zepf "Bone Rotary Chisel"; German Drehmeißel, Wiener Modell) is a hand-held extraction instrument: a narrow chisel blade on a flat handle that is placed in the periodontal space, braced against the alveolar bone and turned by hand to luxate the tooth or root. "Rotary" refers to this turning movement.

It is not struck with a mallet and it is not a handpiece instrument, and Zepf lists it with its root elevators. It comes in straight 2, 3 and 4 mm and bayonet 2, 3 and 4 mm forms.

Clinical Use
- Straight: classically used for the last tooth in an intact arch, such as a third molar: enter the periodontal space from the mesial side, brace the blade on the alveolar bone and turn it to push the tooth distally.
- Bayonet: the offset shank improves access and line of sight in the posterior region.
- Sizes: choose the 2, 3 or 4 mm blade to suit the width of the periodontal space and the root. Always keep the instrument supported on bone, never on the neighbouring tooth.
Care and Reconditioning

Is it a mallet chisel or a handpiece (rotary) instrument?
