Clinical Use of the WHO / PSI Periodontal Probe

• The WHO Community Periodontal Index and the Periodontal Screening Index, where the 3.5 to 5.5 mm band is the decision zone.
• Technique: walk the probe around each tooth with light pressure (about 20 to 25 g), keeping the tip in contact with the root and the shank parallel to the long axis, and read the depth at the gingival margin.
• Reading: read the graduation against the gingival margin at each of the six sites per tooth and record the deepest reading per surface.
