The Gracey 11/12 is the area-specific curette for the mesial surfaces of premolars and molars. Like every Gracey, its blade is offset about 70 degrees to the lower shank with a single working cutting edge, so it adapts to the root without cutting into the pocket wall; the 11/12 shank is skewed so the blade reaches around the mesial line angles of posterior teeth. Helmut Zepf makes the pattern in seven configurations plus replacement inserts, all in Germany, and every one on this page ships from our US warehouse.

Clinical Use of the Gracey 11/12
-
Mesial surfaces of premolars and molars: the 11 end and the 12 end are mirror images, so one instrument covers the mesial surfaces on both sides of the arch.
-
Subgingival scaling and root planing: position the lower shank parallel to the root surface, engage the lower cutting edge, and work with short, overlapping strokes from the base of the pocket coronally.
-
Pairing: the Gracey 13/14 covers the distal surfaces of the same teeth; together the two instruments complete posterior root instrumentation.
-
Deep and narrow sites: choose the M5 version when pockets exceed 5 mm or the root anatomy is narrow; its thinner, longer first shank reaches the base of the pocket with more tactility.
Standard, M5, NANOPAL, Titanium, Handles
M5 deep scaling is Zepf’s design for tight, deep pockets: the first shank is about 3 mm longer than standard and only 0.95 mm thin, so it flexes and transmits tactile information, and the working end is shortened for access beyond 5 mm and along narrow root surfaces. NANOPAL is a surface coating that leaves the instrument smoother and more corrosion-resistant, so it resists staining and reprocesses more easily. Titanium working ends are for use around implants, where steel would mark the implant surface. The ZEPF-bIONIK handle is Zepf’s ergonomic, colour-coded handle — signal purple identifies the 11/12 — with a textured grip that reduces hand fatigue; the Z-SHAPE Relax handle is contoured for a relaxed modified pen grasp and takes interchangeable inserts; TOUCHGRIP is the Hürzeler / Zuhr series built for rotational control in surgical work.
Sharpening, Retipping and Inserts
A curette earns its keep only while it is sharp. Zepf instruments can be sharpened in the practice, sent to our sharpening and reconditioning service, or, on the interchangeable-insert versions, renewed in seconds by swapping the working ends listed above. Sharpening stones and oil are in the diagnostic range.
Warranty and Our Guarantee
Every Zepf Gracey carries a one-year Helmut Zepf Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. And because a curette can only be judged in the hand, you have 60 days to return it for any reason — even after you have used it. Try the 11/12 on real patients; if it is not the instrument for you, send it back.

FAQ
What is a Gracey 11/12 used for? Subgingival scaling and root planing of the mesial surfaces of premolars and molars. It is area-specific: the offset blade and skewed shank are shaped for those surfaces and not for the distal ones.
What is the difference between the 11/12 and the 13/14? Same blade, opposite shank curvature. The 11/12 works mesial surfaces of posterior teeth; the 13/14 works distal surfaces. Most clinicians carry both.
What does M5 mean? Zepf’s deep-scaling design: a first shank about 3 mm longer and 0.95 mm thin, with a shortened working end, for pockets deeper than 5 mm and narrow roots.
Which version is right for implants? The titanium version (24.204.11GM5-TI) or the titanium inserts. Steel working ends can mark implant and abutment surfaces.
Can I replace just the tips? Yes, on the Z-SHAPE Relax and other M4 × 0.5 mm interchangeable handles: unscrew the worn insert with the safety key and fit a new Gracey 11 or 12 insert.
Which handle colour is the 11/12? Signal purple on the ZEPF-bIONIK handle, so it is identified at a glance on the tray.
Is there a warranty? One year under the Helmut Zepf Warranty, and 60 days to return it for any reason, even after use.
