Clinical Uses of the US No. 8406

Occlusal smoothing: the pass after contouring with the No. 7406, removing blade marks from cusp inclines and fossae.
Lingual finishing: refining anterior lingual surfaces before polishing.
Pre-polish: preparing composite for a two-step polisher.

Sequence: contour with the No. 7406, smooth with the No. 8406, and finish with the 30-blade No. 9406 where a pre-polish surface is wanted.

Speed and Technique

Finishing burs work at reduced pressure: use them with water spray in the contra-angle or high-speed handpiece and let the blade count produce the surface; heavy pressure only dulls them.
