Which Football Bur Do You Need?

For crown preparation pick an FG diamond by grit (coarse for reduction, medium for shaping, fine and extra fine for the finish); for finishing composite and anatomy pick a 44E carbide finisher in standard, fine or ultra fine; the HP cutters, abrasives and polishers are the laboratory versions of the same shape.

Clinical Use

The football’s olive profile follows cuspal inclines, so occlusal reduction for crowns and lingual reduction of anterior teeth are cut anatomically rather than flat, and the same shape refines occlusal anatomy in composite and ceramic restorations. Step through the grits — coarse or medium diamond for reduction, fine diamond or carbide finisher for the surface — with water spray at the speed recommended for the shank; see our Dental Bur Speed Chart.

Care and Reconditioning

Busch rotary instruments are reusable: clean, disinfect and sterilize them between patients according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Our Dental Bur Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide walks through the workflow for carbide, diamond and steel instruments.
