RA Burs | Latch-Type Contra-Angle

RA burs are Busch's latch-type (right-angle) rotary instruments for the slow-speed contra-angle handpiece — the 2.35 mm latch shank Busch designates W. The collection runs from the carbide excavating rounds (Busch No. 1, 1S, and the low-vibration 1SX and slim-neck 1SXM cuts) through finishing carbides, bone cutters, PERIO-PRO burs, green-stone and Arkansas abrasives, to the composite, ceramic, zirconia, and metal polishers, brushes, and mandrels. Every instrument on this page is a genuine Busch product and ships from our US warehouse.

Clinical Use

RA instruments do the slow-speed work: caries excavation with the round carbides (the 1SX cut for lower vibration, the 1SXM slim neck for deep, narrow lesions), fissure and inverted-cone preparation at low speed, finishing of composite and amalgam with the 41/44E/45/243 finishing carbides, bone trimming with the 162–269 cutters, periodontal root work with the PERIO-PRO figures, and polishing of composite, ceramic, zirconia, and metal restorations in the color-coded two-grit systems — all at the lower speeds and higher torque where tactile control matters more than cutting speed.

Care and Reconditioning

Carbide and steel RA instruments are cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized between patients in a bur block; silicone polishers and brushes follow the manufacturer's reprocessing symbols on each pack, and prophy cups are single-use. Our Dental Bur Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide covers the full workflow for Busch rotary instruments.

FAQ

What does RA mean on a bur?

Right angle — a 2.35 mm shank with a latch groove for slow-speed contra-angle handpieces. Busch’s German designation is W (Winkelstück).

What are RA burs used for?

Caries excavation at low speed, finishing, prophylaxis, and polishing — anywhere torque and tactile feedback beat raw speed.

Where are these burs made?

Every instrument in this collection is manufactured by Busch & Co. in Engelskirchen, Germany — an ISO 13485-certified specialist in rotary precision instruments since 1905 — and ships fast from our US warehouse.
