Langer 3/4 Universal Curette

The Langer 3/4 is a universal curette for maxillary (upper) premolars and molars. Langer curettes combine a universal blade — two cutting edges at 90 degrees to the shank — with the shank angulations of the Gracey series, so one instrument covers both mesial and distal surfaces of its region. This page lists 7 complete instruments and 12 replaceable tips, all made in Germany by Helmut Zepf, and every one on this page ships from our US warehouse.

Versions, Coatings and Handles

M5 deep scaling is Zepf’s design for tight, deep pockets: the first shank is about 3 mm longer than standard and only 0.95 mm thin, so it flexes and transmits tactile information, and the working end is shortened for access beyond 5 mm and along narrow root surfaces.

NANOPAL is a surface coating that leaves the instrument smoother and more corrosion-resistant, so it resists staining and reprocesses more easily. Titanium working ends are for use around implants, where steel would mark the implant surface. The ZEPF-bIONIK handle is Zepf’s ergonomic, colour-coded handle with a textured grip that reduces hand fatigue.

TOUCHGRIP is the Hürzeler / Zuhr series built for rotational control in surgical work, with matte working tips. The LOTUS line puts the same working ends on a coloured crystal handle. The hollow stainless steel handle is the classic lightweight all-steel instrument.

Replaceable tips fit the M4 × 0.5 mm and M2.5 Zepf handle systems (ZEPF-bIONIK QuickFix, Z-SHAPE Relax, ZEPF-Line) and change with the Zepf safety key.

Warranty and Our Guarantee

Every Zepf instrument on this page carries the Helmut Zepf Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for six months (nine months for NANOPAL-coated versions). And because an instrument can only be judged in the hand, you have 60 days to return it for any reason — even after you have used it. Try it on real patients; if it is not the instrument for you, send it back.

Made in Germany by Helmut Zepf

Helmut Zepf has manufactured dental and surgical instruments in Germany for over 100 years. Every instrument on this page is forged, ground and finished by Zepf and carries its part number for traceability.

Clinical Use

  • Maxillary (upper) premolars and molars: both cutting edges are used, so the mesial and distal surfaces of each tooth are covered with the same instrument.
  • Subgingival scaling and root planing: keep the face of the blade at 90 degrees to the shank, adapt the lower cutting edge to the root, and use short overlapping strokes.
  • Deep and narrow sites: choose the M5 version when pockets exceed 5 mm; the very-fine-tip replaceable tips suit tight interproximal spaces.

Sharpening, Retipping and Inserts

An instrument earns its keep only while it is sharp. Zepf instruments can be sharpened in the practice, sent to our sharpening and reconditioning service, or, on the replaceable-tip versions, renewed in seconds by swapping the working ends. Sharpening stones and oil are in the diagnostic range.

Our Dental Instrument Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide covers cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of Helmut Zepf hygiene instruments.

FAQ

What is a Langer 3/4 used for?

Universal scaling and root planing of maxillary (upper) premolars and molars: one instrument covers both mesial and distal surfaces.

Universal or area-specific?

A universal curette works both sides of the tooth with its two cutting edges; an area-specific Gracey has one cutting edge and a shank made for one region. Many clinicians keep both.

What does M5 mean?

Zepf’s deep-scaling design: a first shank about 3 mm longer and 0.95 mm thin, with a shortened working end, for pockets deeper than 5 mm and narrow roots.

Is there a warranty?

Six months (nine months for NANOPAL-coated versions) under the Helmut Zepf Warranty, and 60 days to return it for any reason, even after use.
