Surgical Length Burs | FG-LG 21 mm & RA-L 26 mm

Surgical length burs — Busch’s FG-LG (21 mm overall) and RA-L (26 mm overall) shanks, versus the 19 mm and 22.5 mm standards — extend reach for posterior access, deeper preparations, and surgical visibility, keeping the handpiece head clear of the working field.

This collection holds the RA-L carbide rounds (Busch No. 1S, 1SX, 1SXM), the RA-L surgical round and taper bone cutters (No. 141, 141A, 162, 162A, 166, 166A), and the FG-LG ZIRAMANT zirconia diamonds (No. 6379Z, 6855Z, 6860Z, 8379Z, 8855Z, 8860Z).

These lengths carry the same head geometry as their standard siblings — only the shank code (FG-LG or RA-L) changes, so your technique transfers directly. Need even more reach? See the extra-long 25 & 34 mm collection.

Clinical Use

The RA-L rounds (1S plain, 1SX low-vibration, 1SXM slim-neck) excavate deep caries and open access where a standard 22.5 mm shank leaves the contra-angle head in the way; the 141/141A surgical rounds and 162/162A/166/166A taper pointed cutters are the bone burs for third molar sectioning, osteotomy, and root tip removal at low speed with irrigation; and the FG-LG ZIRAMANT diamonds in coarse (green ring) and fine (red ring) grits cut and adjust zirconia restorations with the turbine head held back from the tooth.

Care and Reconditioning

Long-shank burs are cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized between patients in a bur block; check the extended shank for straightness before each use, and discard any bur that has been bent, chipped, or run against metal. Our Dental Bur Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide covers the full workflow for Busch rotary instruments.

FAQ

What is a surgical length bur?

A bur with an extended shank that reaches deeper sites — third molar sectioning, bone work, deep caries — while the handpiece head stays clear of tissue. This collection covers the 21 mm FG and 26 mm RA lengths.

Do surgical length shanks fit standard handpieces?

Yes — FG-LG seats in standard turbine chucks and RA-L in standard latch contra-angles; only the exposed length differs.
