Onyx Hand Instruments by Helmut Zepf

The Onyx hand instruments collection brings together every Helmut Zepf instrument finished with the hard, non-reflective Onyx working-end coating — the glare-free black surface that reduces light reflection under operatory and loupe illumination while adding wear resistance to the working tips. From Xcision-Line® extraction forceps and X-Tool root tip elevators to Onyx-coated raspatories, periotomes, tunneling instruments, retractors, supercut scissors, and composite instruments, each piece is manufactured in Germany by Helmut Zepf Medizintechnik.

The Onyx coating is applied to the working ends of instruments across the ZEPF surgical, extraction, soft-tissue, and restorative programs — look for the OX suffix in the Helmut Zepf reference number or “Onyx Coating” in the product name. See the manufacturer’s Onyx Design flyer (PDF) for the full technical background, and our Surgical Instrument Library for related literature.

What Onyx Coating Does

Onyx creates a durable, matte black finish that increases surface hardness by 3–5 times compared to uncoated stainless steel, while maintaining the instrument's precision edges. Beyond the glare-free surface described above, the coating's smooth finish offers excellent sliding properties that help prevent tissue adhesion, resists the buildup of proteins and other contaminants for easier cleaning and reprocessing, and — especially when paired with Supercut blade designs — helps cutting edges stay sharper longer, reducing how often an instrument needs resharpening. Combined with Zepf's ergonomic bIONIK handles, Onyx-coated instruments are built for high-volume practices. Read the full breakdown in Discover the Power of Onyx Coating.

FAQ

What's the difference between Onyx and NANOPAL coating? Both are hard ZEPF surface coatings for glare reduction and wear resistance, but they're used on different instrument families. Onyx is used broadly across ZEPF's surgical, extraction, and restorative instruments — forceps, elevators, scissors, and raspatories. NANOPAL is used specifically on the interchangeable-insert and handle periodontal hygiene system — Gracey and Langer curettes, sickle scalers, and their Z-SHAPE Relax and ZEPF-bIONIK handles.

Does Onyx coating wear off with repeated use? Like any hard surface treatment, Onyx is wear-resistant but not indestructible — inspect instruments during routine reprocessing and retire any piece showing flaking or exposed base metal.

Are Onyx-coated instruments autoclavable? Yes — Onyx-coated instruments are validated for the same steam sterilization cycles as their uncoated stainless steel counterparts.
