Innovative Cooling Technology
Each Busch COOL DIAMANT Diamond Bur features asymmetrically intersecting diamond-coated grooves that optimize coolant flow and interrupt the grinding process up to 7 times per rotation. This unique geometry significantly reduces heat generation during cutting, protecting tooth structure and surrounding soft tissues while maintaining exceptional cutting speed and control. The result is a smoother, cooler operation that benefits both the clinician and the patient.
Independently Tested at the Medical University of Innsbruck
A scientific study from the Medical University of Innsbruck (published in Stomatologie 2009; 106: 29–34) evaluated diamond burs from multiple manufacturers under rigorously standardised conditions — 200,000 RPM, 50 ml/min cooling, and a 152 g load applied to ceramic blocks. The results were clear: The Busch Cool Diamond (Busch® K) achieved the highest total cutting length of 17.30 mm in the primary test series, significantly outperforming the other burs tested (p < 0.05). Burs with cooling grooves consistently ranked highest for cutting efficiency and sustained longevity. Although all burs showed a performance decline after the first 10 minutes, Cool Diamond instruments maintained superior performance longer, reducing the frequency of replacements. Read the method, the results and what they mean on our Innsbruck Study page.

Clinical Use
The Busch COOL DIAMANT Diamond Bur is ideal for tooth preparation, restorative dentistry, crown and bridge work, and other high-speed procedures where low heat generation and smooth performance are essential. Whether used in routine restorations or complex prosthetic cases, these instruments consistently deliver the efficiency and accuracy that modern dental practice requires.
Care and Reconditioning
Busch rotary instruments are reusable: clean, disinfect and sterilize them between patients according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and replace a bur once it dulls or shows damage. Our Dental Bur Reprocessing & Sterilization Guide walks through the workflow for carbide, diamond and steel instruments.

FAQ
What makes the COOL DIAMANT different from standard diamond burs? The asymmetrically intersecting cooling grooves interrupt the grinding process up to 7 times per rotation, actively reducing heat buildup in a way that conventional diamond burs cannot match.
Is the gold coating biocompatible? Yes. The biocompatible gold coating is designed for safe intraoral use, contributing to the instrument's durability and patient safety.
What procedures are these burs suited for? They are well-suited for tooth preparation, crown and bridge work, restorative dentistry, and any high-speed procedure where thermal protection and cutting efficiency are priorities.
Has COOL DIAMANT been independently tested? Yes. In the Medical University of Innsbruck study, the Busch cooling-groove diamond achieved the highest total cutting length of the burs tested over 40 minutes of continuous use. The full summary is on our Innsbruck Study page.
